Decreasing deer MVCs

An experiment in reducing car/deer MVCs is being called a major success in the SD&G Detachment area.

The detachment began a study in the Fall of 2000 into the problem and possible solutions. A review of collision data from 1999 and 2000 provided information, which allowed areas throughout the counties to be targeted as extreme high-risk areas. One area, County Road 2 east from Upper Canada Road toward Ingleside was identified as a prime test site for the program. Professionals in the field of deer biology in Canada and the United States where contacted for their expertise.

This led to consultations with John Strieter, who had developed a reflector system known as a Strieter-Lite, which had proven successful in a number of areas in reducing vehicle/deer MVCs.

In October of 2001, Brister Insurance Brokers Ltd, Pilot Insurance, Economical Insurance and Dominion of Canada Insurance companies jointly supported the purchase of the Strieter-Lite reflectors for use in the test area. Signs were installed in the test area in June 2002.

Despite an increase in the total number of car/deer collisions in the SD&G Detachment area, the number of collisions in our test area has not only decreased, but is at its lowest level since the research was undertaken. Only two collisions have occurred in the test area since December 2001. One collision happened when three deer had been on the road at the time a vehicle approached, two were able to flee and one was struck. It should be noted that the reflectors are not designed to assist in this type of situation, with animals already on the roadway, but only with animals approaching the highway. In the second case an adjustment in the location of posted reflectors was required to ensure better coverage of the road area.

The final result is that there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of collisions in the test area, with the installed reflector system being a major contributing factor.
